Southern Charm in Charleston SC: Charleston, SC trip

Updated: Sep 1, 2023

I recently visited Charleston, SC and was amazed by the friendly people, the hospitality, and the cool vibe of the city. I have a friend, Missy Thompson, who I thought summarized Charleston so well. If you have ever been to Savannah, GA this will resonate with you. She said, "Savannah is like the Grandmother and Charleston is the cool uncle."

History is widely embraced in Charleston but they also have a great social scene with live music all over town and unique shops to explore. Restaurants are plentiful and delicious. We enjoyed 39 Rue Du Jean on St John St. The beautiful waterfront also makes it a great destination for so many people.

Bring the kids and enjoy the South Carolina Aquarium featuring an albino American alligator and a sea turtle hospital. The aquarium is open 9-5 daily. Pricing for adults is $29.95 and $22.95 for children. Another great area for kids is Waterfront Park on the Cooper River. It is a 12 acre park with a large lawn and 2 fountains. There's also a children's museum.

History buffs can take in Fort Sumter which was important in both the War of 1812 and, of course, the Civil War. The USS Yorktown is also open for tours and has fighter planes that you can sit in! (The kids LOVE this.) The USS Yorktown was used in WWII and Vietnam. You are invited to imagine life on board as you see all kinds of areas of the ship. I love the revitalization I noted all over the city, row houses getting face lifted, Antebellum homes returning to their form glory. It makes me excited for Charleston's future.

On top of these great attractions, the Carnival Sunshine calls the port of Charleston her home. Many people plan a trip to Charleston to embark on their cruise. This was an important change for the cruise industry there as a new ship always amps up cruising. Parking at the cruise port will run you $17 per day. There are several hotels near the port such as, Harbourview Inn and Market Pavilion Hotel. Others offer parking for the duration of your cruise as well as shuttle to and from port. The Best Western Charleston Inn is 5.5 miles from port and does offer shuttle.
